Flatirons Trek
Both Anand and me have always wanted to hike the Rockies, but had never gotten an oppurtunity, until yesterday. Anand's friend invited us to trek with him in the Flatirons. For the lesser mortals ;), the Flatirons are one of the most beautiful and unique mountains in the world. Few places in the world share such a rich and diverse trekking and climbing history as the Flatirons. The Flatirons are unique in the sense that they were formed due to the erosion of the Rockies, and hence are very "un-like" the usual mountains. They look more mineral-rich and have sharp peaks. Okay, enough said about the Flatirons. Lets get to business. :)

We woke up on Sunday morning looking forward to hiking the mountains. We did breakfast and left at around 11 AM and headed towards the mountains. It took us about 20 minutes to get to the foot of the mountains. Since it has snowed last Friday, most part of the mountains were still covered with snow. Ther parking lot was almost full and we saw a bunch of enthusiastic
trekkers heading towards the trail. As we looked up at the mountains, there were hordes of people up there. Most people in Colorado love the outdoors and are major health-freaks. They all seem fit and in shape. Inspired by them, we headed with full vigor. There were many trails and our friend suggested that we take the easier ones initially. The weather was very pleasant and the sun was shining bright.

There were some steep paths but most of them were lame and "groomed" for trekkers.

The snow was slowly melting away, forming slippery ice which could be dangerous. We covered about two trails in two hours and then headed back to Boulder. Boulder is a University town which has a set-back ambience. We lunched at 'Masalaa', an Indian joint and headed back home with wonderful memeries of the trek.
We look forward to more hiking. Our desire to enjoy the serenity and outstanding rock of the Flatirons has become stronger.
