Immigration feud
The debate on resolving the US illegal immigration epidemic is never-ending. The standard response to illegal immigration has been to increase border enforcement. But is this really feasible? For the 2000 mile long Mexican Border?! Naah! Even if the border is fenced all along, I am sure desperation will drive people to take alternative routes to gain entry into the Land of Oppurtunities.
There are about 12 million illegal immigrants in the US. Does the US Govt. plan on an amnesty program for all the 12 million people? Would this not encourage more illegal immigrants into the country on the hope that some day, they would become citizens of the US? On the other hand, if illegals are allowed to remain what they are today, they might be driven to commit crime because of their poor living conditions. The issue is a two sided coin. The suggestion to provide a guest-worker visa status that entitles illegal immigrants to legally live in the US for a fixed number of years seems like a good one.
Another though-provoking issue is whether US-born children of illegal immigrants deserve to become natual US citizens. It seems more logical to provide citizenship only to US-borns of parents who are legal residents of the US. Otherwise, by year 2050, Hispanics might probably be the most dominant race in the US, leave alone the fact that Spanish is already an official language here.

But hey, on the other end of the road, America has been a land of immigrants. It is they, who immigrated yesterday that built today's America. Americans (Who are they, actually?) raised a huge hue and cry to Irish immigration back in the 19th century. After that, the Italian and then the Polish faced the same kind of discrimination and abuse. Each successive group of immigrants have generated a sense of fear and loathing among the citizens whose forefathers themselves immigrated eons ago. And so it is with the new wave with Mexican immigrants. It will remain until the new immigrants become Americans and America finds another group of immigrants to focus their fears on!!
